February Cottage Garden: Planning & Planting Foxglove and Delphinium Seedlings
The weather has been super interesting lately. It was below zero for weeks. Now, it’s been above freezing temperatures and the snow is melting. It’s way too early for a false spring! But I’m so hopeful it’s for real. 😂
I’ve lived here long enough to not be fooled though! Temperatures will drop and we’re bound to get another astronomical amount of snow. In the meantime, we’ve started to plant out seedlings for the cottage garden and cut flower garden!
I am SO pumped to get more flowers in the garden this summer. I gathered so many seeds from last year! I’m hoping they’ll germinate and we’ll get more columbines, foxgloves, and calendula in the backyard!
Last summer we cleared out the ‘play’ bed. It was so over grown with weeds. Emme wanted her own cut flower garden so we have mapped out what will go in that bed.
Last year, she really wanted foxgloves and daisies. I also picked out some easy growing flowers like calendula, asters, and cosmos. I’m really looking forward to growing a cut flower garden together!
This year I am trying some new flowers. I bought delphiniums, poppies, and foxgloves from Johnny’s seeds. I’m going to give zinnias and scabiosa another go. They didn’t bloom last year. I planned to start the seeds even earlier year but maybe it was because they didn’t get enough sun. It was pretty cloudy/rainy last year.
I’m doing square foot gardening again. It made it so much easier to figure out how many of each seed I need to start this winter. I was pretty successful with it last year.
Delphiniums and foxgloves are the first to get started this year! We planted foxgloves for our cut flower garden and a different variety for the cottage garden. I’m hoping to have a whole row of foxgloves in front of the fence to stop the weeds from getting into the yard. There’s an easement behind the fence and the weeds creep their way in!
We’ve got the seedlings on a timed power strip. The light comes on at 8 p.m. and shuts off at 8 a.m. They may need more light and we’ll def have to transplant them into bigger containers later on.
We’ll be planting more seeds in a few weeks. Stay tuned!
What will you be planting this year? Let me know in the comments!
